Hosting, updates, OS releases and fixes. Budget for it from day one — it does not stop.
This is a planning estimate built from typical effort per feature, not a quote. Real numbers depend on the detail behind each feature, the state of any system it must talk to, and how settled the requirements are.
What you can do
- Sanity-check a quote. See the hours behind a number instead of taking a total on trust.
- Find what to cut. Every feature shows its own effort, so trimming scope is a decision rather than a guess.
- Compare markets. The identical build priced across five regions, using the same hours.
- Plan the calendar. A timeline that responds to team size, because adding people does not divide the work perfectly.
- Remember maintenance. The line item that turns a launch budget into an actual budget.
Why estimates vary so much
Ask five agencies to price the same brief and you will get five very different answers — not because some are dishonest, but because “user accounts” means a login form to one of them and single sign-on with role-based permissions and an audit trail to another. The way to close that gap is not a better calculator; it is a more specific brief. Use this to work out which features are worth specifying properly first.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to build an app?
Almost always between a tenth and ten times whatever number you first had in mind, because "an app" covers everything from a four-screen MVP to a marketplace with payments, chat and an admin back office. What actually drives the figure is the feature list, whether you need one platform or three, and how much of the design is bespoke. This calculator makes those choices explicit and shows the hours behind the total rather than producing a number out of nowhere.
Why is the answer a range?
Because a single number would be false precision. Two teams given the same feature list will produce estimates that differ by a third, and the requirement detail behind each feature moves the figure more than anything else. The range shown is roughly plus or minus twenty per cent around the point estimate, which is honest for a planning figure. Anyone quoting an exact cost before scoping is guessing too.
Which features cost the most?
Offline mode with sync, real-time chat, video streaming and anything involving AI are the usual surprises — each carries edge cases that dwarf the happy path. Offline sync in particular looks like a checkbox and behaves like a distributed systems problem. The admin dashboard is the other one: it is rarely in the pitch, always needed, and often as large as a third of the user-facing app.
Is cross-platform really cheaper than native?
For most products, yes — roughly a third more than a single platform, against nearly double for two native codebases. React Native and Flutter share the great majority of the code. Native still wins where you need heavy graphics, deep hardware access or absolutely first-class platform behaviour, and paying twice is the honest price of that.
Why does the backend not get multiplied by the number of platforms?
Because it is built once. The platform multiplier applies to the front end, which is what you genuinely build more than once. Estimators that multiply everything overstate multi-platform projects considerably, which is one reason quotes for the same brief vary so wildly.
What about maintenance?
Budget for it from the start. Somewhere around a fifth of the build cost per year covers hosting, dependency and OS updates, store compliance, and the fixes that follow real usage. Apps that skip this budget do not stay still; they quietly stop working as the platforms move underneath them.
Are the regional rates accurate?
They are typical blended agency rates, not quotes, and they move with the market — so the rate field is editable. The regional comparison is there because the same hours priced in five places is usually the most useful thing on the page: it shows that what varies between a Karachi and a San Francisco quote is mostly the rate, not the work.
Is my estimate sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser, nothing is transmitted, and there is no form to fill in before you see the number. If you want it checked against a real scope, that is a conversation you can choose to start.
